Chapter Thirteen
For once, Todd found himself actually relieved to see Monday arrive—except for having
to share half of his classes with Mark, who’d been nothing but sullen, argumentative, and an
outright pain in the ass the entire weekend. Todd was tired of it; he didn’t think he could take it
anymore. For now anyway, he’d head home, at least at night. For the first time since they’d
renewed their friendship, Todd wished he could switch seats with someone else.
Fortunately, it looked as if the day might hold some promise after all. When the teacher
entered the classroom, he had someone new to the school with him, obviously a student. The
first things Todd noticed were his red hair and blue eyes. He couldn’t help but notice that he
seemed nervous, understandably so. Todd nudged Mark.
“Hey, pay attention. We’ve got a new classmate.”
Mark barely glanced up, as if he didn’t wish to make an effort. “Who cares?”
Todd sighed and sat back.
“Class, may I have you attention? This is Taylor Andrews. He’ll be joining our class
from today forward.” He pointed out an empty chair near the back. “Welcome to Film Analysis,
Taylor. If you’d take that seat, we’ll begin. Our film this week is “Gone with the Wind.”
Todd turned, meeting the eyes of the new guy. He offered him a friendly smile, which
Taylor returned.
Mark slumped in his chair and rolled his eyes.
Somewhere during the Civil War, the film was paused and class dismissed. Todd stood
up and stretched, grateful to be able to move again. He waited for Taylor to make his way toward
the front of the room. “Hi, I’m Todd.” He offered his hand, which Taylor accepted.
“Hi, Todd. Nice to meet you.”
“Know where your next class is?”
Taylor pulled out his schedule of classes. “Uh, not really. Can you tell me how to get to
room 217?”
“I’m heading near there myself, I can show ya. Oh…” He glanced at Mark, who was
lagging just behind them. “This is Mark. Mark, meet Taylor.”
“Nice to meet you, Mark.”
The redhead gave the new student a long glance and finally offered his hand. “Taylor.”
He turned his attention to Todd. “Gotta go… let’s move.”
“We’re all heading that way anyway. Gonna show Taylor where his next class is.”
Mark snorted. “Fine.” He didn’t bother to wait, taking off on his own, he walked down
the hall toward the art class at double his usual rate of speed. Soon he was lost to view among the
other students passing through the hall.
“Was it something I said?” Taylor asked, his forehead puckered.
“Naw, it’s not you. It’s a long story. Way too long. Come on, let’s get you to class.”
Mark dreaded the next class—art with Clay. Damn, why’d Todd have to escort the new
kid? Now he was left to face his demons alone. No matter. He walked into the classroom and sat
directly across from his nemesis.
“You’re lucky Dylan was there last night. That’s all I’m sayin’,” Mark grumbled.
Clay shook his head, his eyes focused on his drawing— he gave no response, or any other
indication that he’d heard Mark’s bravado.
At the last minute, Todd ran in and grabbed his seat.
